Collage Master Class with David Adix

Class Description:
In this three-day Collage Master Class, immerse yourself in the world of collage using both traditional and non-traditional materials. We will explore a wide range of papers, including handcrafted, vintage, and unconventional sources like junk mail, found paper, cardboard, and old coffee table books rich with imagery.
Over the course of the workshop, you’ll work on a series of projects focusing on composition and the elements of formal design: shape, negative space, line, color, and pattern. The goal is to elevate your understanding of what makes a good composition into what makes a great collage.
We will also engage with the process of deconstruction, a powerful technique in collage, and create both abstract and representational constructions that balance complexity and form. By the end of the class, participants will have developed a cohesive body of work. Group critiques will offer valuable insights and deepen your understanding of this subtle and profound art form.

Instructor Bio:
David Adix’s journey into the world of collage began in the mid-80s while studying for his MFA in Theatre at the University of Arizona. As he explored the craft of acting, he simultaneously discovered a passion for the visual arts, specifically the magic of collage. Working with paper, found materials, and everyday detritus, David found a unique and personal form of artistic expression.
His work in collage has evolved over the years, spanning assemblage, sculpture, encaustic, and abstract painting. David has exhibited his large-format paper collages in the Arizona Biennial twice and continues to push the boundaries of non-traditional materials in his compositions. He is excited to share his discoveries and the magic of collage with others.
