Crystal Marie is an artist, author, and creative life coach passionate about helping others reclaim their unique artistic voices. With a flourishing career as a professional artist, Crystal is represented by galleries and has exhibited her work in solo shows and fine art exhibitions nationwide. Her accolades include a fellowship and feature exhibit at the internationally renowned Racine Art Museum in 2018.
Crystal is the author of The Art of Expressive Collage (North Light Books, 2015) and is currently writing Recovering Your Intuitive Voice: An Artist’s Guide to Silencing the Inner Critic. She teaches workshops online and across the U.S., inspiring students to explore art as a meaningful and transformative process.
Class Description
Explore the interplay of shadow and light in this hands-on workshop that combines the traditional Japanese craft of Momigami with contemporary mixed-media techniques. Participants will:
Learn to create and apply traditional Momigami paste.
Transform paper through kneading techniques to create textured, versatile materials.
Build a strong project foundation using Momigami-covered frames or supports.
Incorporate stitching, collage, mark-making, and light assemblage elements into their designs.
The class invites participants to reflect on their personal shadow and light stories, infusing deeper meaning into their art. Whether your style leans toward whimsical kitsch, contemporary, or something in between, you’ll gain the skills and inspiration to create a piece that resonates with your inner creative voice.

Supply List
This workshop encourages creativity and flexibility with supplies. While most materials can be adapted to suit what you have on hand, the following two items are essential:
Konjac gum (Konjac powder) – Available at local Asian markets.
Long-grain paper such as Kozo or Mulberry paper.
Momigami Paste Supplies:
Konjac gum (powder)
Water
Hake-style brush OR basic kitchen sponge
Liquid measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Small saucepan
Electric burner or stovetop
Kitchen whisk or gravy whisk
Paper:
2–3 large sheets of Thai Kozo or Mulberry paper (neutral or white; one sheet must be twice the size of your frame).
Additional sheets of Kozo or Mulberry in colors of your choice.
Frame:
8" x 12" D handle for basket making OR
8"–10" round basket-making hoop
Optional Supplies:
Mark-making mediums: inks, graphite, watercolor paints
Embroidery needle
Embroidery or Sashiko floss in your choice of colors
Found objects: flat, lightweight elements
Lightweight ephemera: used tea bags, bits of fabric, or decorative papers
