Eco-Printed Journal with Kathy Johnson

Bio: Kathy Johnson is a collage and eco-print artist from Waterford, CT. She has a passion for plants, paper, rusty metal, and creating a second life for discarded items by repurposing them into her art. Since discovering the process of eco-printing her garden has played an important role in her art journey and she sees it as an extension of her studio space.

In this 4-day Zoom workshop, you will:
   

  • Learn the basics of making eco-prints on a variety of papers and raw silk.

  • Discover what leaves and flowers are the best to use for eco-printing and why.

  • Learn about mordants, what they are and how they can enhance and change the colors of your prints.

  • Prepare two bundle styles: Flat layered bundles and rolled bundles.

  • Introduce iron into the process and make botanical rust prints.

  • Explore the effects of introducing iron into the process while making botanical rust prints. 

  • Create plant portraits on small papers that can be used as tags or on your journal pages.

  • Receive instruction for ‘cooking’ your bundles between class sessions.

  • Assemble your printed pages into a gate fold style journal.

  • Learn ways to collect and store plant material for future use.

  • Have access to a private Facebook group and the Zoom recordings for one year.

  • A class kit will be provided that includes all plant material and mordants needed, raw silk stripes and a variety of papers. 

  • A detailed description of each week’s class will also be sent to registered students.

  • A link for rusting cans will also be provided so everyone has time to get ready for week 2.


The class fee includes: shipping of your kit containing mordants, cover paper & specialty papers, and digital class handout.

Supply List: Your kit will include most everything you will need but you may wish to also supply:
sheet music, tracing paper, mixed media - Strathmore watercolor paper, paint chips, garden or other book pages
Kathy will give you specific paper sizes as day 1 and day 2 will be different.
