Artist Bio: Nina Fickett is a seasoned mixed media artist based in the vibrant landscapes of Arizona, where she resides with her husband.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design under her belt, Nina embarked on a dynamic artistic journey that has spanned several decades. Her artistic evolution took a significant turn in 1996 when she transitioned from the commercial art industry to explore the realms of handmade paper and collage. However, it was in 2015 that Nina truly found her artistic calling within the world of mixed media, igniting a profound passion for exploring textures and the tactile dimensions of her creations.
In 2024, Nina became a Powertex-certified instructor, marking a new chapter in her artistic career. With her certification, Nina enhances her ability to share her expertise and passion for mixed media with aspiring artists and enthusiasts alike. This achievement not only underscores Nina's commitment to continuous learning and growth but also highlights her dedication to expanding her artistic repertoire and enriching the creative community around her. Nina's creative process is deeply rooted in intuitive experimentation. She thrives on the spontaneity and freedom found in mixing various mediums and materials, allowing each piece to evolve organically. As an art educator, Nina is dedicated to sharing her enthusiasm for artistic exploration with others. Artist Statement: My work is rooted in the quiet peace found within the in-between spaces of my surroundings—those overlooked textures and moments that seem to exist outside of time. From an early age, I discovered a profound sense of calm in these spaces, and this feeling has become the driving force behind my creative process. Through abstract mixed media, I’m able to build and manipulate layers of diverse materials to create environments that are at once familiar and abstract, fluid yet textured.
I use various techniques to craft soft, delicate areas that flow seamlessly between bursts of bold, unpredictable texture. These contrasts evoke the sense of discovery and calm I’ve always sought. Every painting is an assemblage of these in-between spaces, a reflection of the unseen yet deeply felt parts of our world.
My process begins intuitively. I lay a foundation through collage, push it back, build bold textures, and then soften them. I exploit these layers to form something unexpected. Finally, I step back and consider the composition and tonality. Most times, I make a few alterations, trusting the space that’s already been created.
I see my work as an invitation to travel through these spaces with me, offering viewers the opportunity to find their own moments of peace and reflection within the textures.
