Jessica Drenk, Book Artist

Is it a book or is it a sculpture? Jessica's work is both and asks questions of the viewer about the nature of artists' books. Jessica received an MFA from U. of Arizona, and is represented in Tucson by Miles Conrad gallery. Previous work was shown in California where she received a B.A. from Pomona College. Simon Donovan - Artist, Teacher & Sculptor
"It all begins with a pencil and paper"
A Journey from Private to Public Art and back again.
Simon will present an entertaining and informative talk. You may not be familiar with his name but you have probably driven right by two of his public art works, The Rattlesnake Bridge over Broadway, and the Flying Books that decorate Woods Library on First Avenue.

Laura Wait - Printmaker and Book Artist

Laura Wait lives in Colorado and makes unique books and small editions using painting and printmaking techniques. With certificates in Printmaking and in Bookbinding from Croydon College of Art, England, her 25 years’ experience as a bookbinder and conservator is the basis for her excellent bookbinding technique in the English tradition, including leather fine bindings and medieval-style wooden board bindings. An active painter and printmaker, she exhibits her art in Colorado galleries, and her books are in many private and public collections, including the Library of Congress. Members attending will view the entries in this year’s Barbara Lewis Book Challenge and cast their vote for their top three choices. The three winners will be announced at the May meeting.

Book Challenge Winners Announced!

Participants in various IOMH groups present their work. IOMH groups are 3-8 members who commit to a chosen goal to work toward higher levels of learning within a specific medium. Also, The winners of the Barbara Lewis Book Challenge will be announced and Molly McClintock, winner of the 2008 PaperWorks University of Arizona School of Art Scholarship, will be introduced.

The Poetry Center library contains one of the nation's finest, most comprehensive collections of contemporary English language poetry and poetry in translation. Though the collection is non circulating, the Center has a comfortable reading room welcome to all for study and enjoyment.Join Librarian Rodney Phillips for a tour of the Poetry Center  Rodney will conduct a tour of the building, highlighting the Rare Book room with collections of artist's books, collaborative books, and fine press editions. Paperworks Member Lyn Pass will show her paintings done in response to her translation of Baudelaire poems, and of other poetry. She will present her original art work and answer questions about the way she works, her influences and preferred styles. Admission is free. Tour will be limited to 25 PW members.

Sharing Techniques & Pot Luck Brunch

Please bring samples of techniques you have learned at workshops, salons or other classes. This will not be a demo of techniques but a display and short introduction by each member. Bring a dish to share, a loaf of bread, cheese, a salad, and meet new members and long time ones, too.

 Go For It: The Art of Getting a Gallery

Program will be a panel discussion with Vicki Schwager, owner of Details Art and Design, Tucson artist Carrie Seid who is represented by several top-notch galleries and teaches at the UofA, and Paperworks member Sherrie Posternak, who owned Vista Fine Crafts gallery before moving to Tucson will moderate a lively and informative discussion of "Go for it: The Art of Getting a Gallery." Panel members will speak about how to approach a gallery, how to price your work, how to get organized etc. There will be a question and answer session included. Anyone needing the encouragement and information should make sure they join us.

Linda Soberman - Beyond the Photograph

Linda Soberman is a photo-based mixed media artist and educator who maintain studios in Michigan and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She exhibits and teaches nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Goldstein Gallery in Chatham, New York; Generator Gallery, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; Fotonoviembre, Merida, Mexico; Water Street Gallery, Saugatuck, Michigan; Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy. She has been a visiting artist at Bellas Artes, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy; Oregon College for Art and Craft, Portland, Oregon; the Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York; the Vermont Center for Photography; and the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto.

Annual Holiday Show & Sell

Our annual holiday Show and Sell will take place at our November meeting, giving members enough advance time to shop and mail to their loved ones a lot of excellent art produced by Paperworks members. Beat the crowds and come admire and purchase art and crafts of many media, and talk to the artists who made them.

Barbara Rogers: An Artist's Journey

Our special guest presenter will be the talented and inspirational artist Barbara Rogers who recently retired as professor of art at the University of Arizona. Barbara, a Tucson artist, has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally including one person exhibitions at major galleries and museums in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Scottsdale, Germany, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. Her work is in major public and private collections including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, The Oakland Museum of Art, and The San Jose Museum of Art.

Jack Dykinga, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer will be our special guest speaker. Jack is author and co-author of several books including; Stone Canyons of the Colorado Plateau, Large Format Nature Photography, Frog Mountain Blues and Desert:The Mojave and Death Valley.
